Mezcal and Tequila are both distilled from the agave plant and produced only in Mexico. However, Mezcal is not a type of Tequila. By law, Tequilas can only be made with blue agave and only produced in the state of Jalisco while Mezcal is made from the maguey agave plant and produced mainly in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The maguey agave gives Mezcal a distinctively smokey flavor that is very different from Tequila.
If you looking for a worm in your Tequila, you are looking in the wrong place. The worm is in the Mezcal. The worms that live on the maguey agave were first put into the bottles as a marketing gimmick and remain there for that reason only. While the addition of a worm may give this unique drink a decidedly unrefined image, there are artisan distilleries that produce complex and sophisticated Mezcal.2014-07-08 13:05:22

How to Drink Mezcal:
Because of the strong flavor it is best unmixed. It is not recommended to add water either. It is usually drunk straight as a shot with some salt and lime.
